Skye’s reassurance did make him relax a little; he felt a bit better, but not by much. He felt massively guilty for all of this–she’d warned him that Jonathan wasn’t a good person and he had ignored her, so he felt that he was to blame for ninety nine percent of this mess. It was his fault for even hoping. For even believing for one moment that anyone at all could find him attractive or likeable, that was just something people would only tell him to get things out of him. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, words starting to spill from his mouth. “I had it all planned, yknow, I had every circumstance mapped out with each response I could come up with and I didn’t–I never–a h-hug would be nice.”

Skye didn’t wait for him to say anything past that, lunging forward to wrap her arms around his neck. “Plans rarely work out, Fitz. Life doesn’t work that way,” she said. “Your value is still there, even if you ran into the literal worst person you could’ve run into and he didn’t want to hold hands or reclaim his soul from Satan. A lot of people really love you for very different things. He hasn’t sucked those things out of you. Nothing’s changed.”

“Oh, and I kind of feel like you need to take the ‘least supportive pretend girlfriend’ thing back.”
